Twahirah Islamic Center Online School was founded by Sheikh Kimala Akram, a dedicated professional teacher, with a vision to spread Islamic knowledge. Initially, Sheikh Kimala offered free lessons to people in Qur’an and Yassarna through WhatsApp, a platform accessible to many. His goal was simple yet impactful; to promote Islam by making these teachings available to anyone interested.
By the end of 2019, his classes had attracted a substantial number of students. However, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 forced him to shift focus entirely to online teaching as schools were closed and he couldn’t continue with his former job. With no income to support his ever increasing personal and family needs, Sheikh Kimala asked students for a modest contribution of UGX 5,000, ensuring he could continue teaching by covering internet costs.
The response was overwhelmingly positive from people in different parts of the world. Students from all walks of life, eager to continue their spiritual development during the lockdown, appreciated the flexibility of learning at their convenience via WhatsApp, Zoom, and Skype. This growing demand prompted Sheikh Kimala to expand. He hired additional teachers, formalized operations, formed a simple office at his parents’ home before eventually renting a larger, independent housing facility nearby.
In 2021, Twahirah Islamic Center Online School became a registered institution with URSB. With offices at Gayaza-Kijabijjo, Wakiso District, the center installed a reliable internet connection, equipped teachers with more phones, then updated our registration system from using regular books to everything being done online from; marketing, registration, payment and teaching.
Since its inception, Twahirah Islamic Center has touched the lives of over 5,000 students, providing courses in Arabic, Quran memorization, Tajweed, Tilaawa Al Quran, Tasfeer Al Quran, Yassarna and much more. The school operates in several languages, including Luganda, English, Lusoga, Arabic, and Swahili, ensuring that Islamic knowledge is accessible to a diverse audience. Each student has a personal teacher, and lessons are tailored to individual schedules.
The growth of the online school also led to the creation of Twahirah Islamic Charity Organization (TICO), an NGO dedicated to helping the vulnerable, including orphans, the elderly, widows, and those from impoverished backgrounds. The resources generated by the online school, along with support from partners and members, help sustain this charitable work.
Twahirah Islamic Center continues to enrich lives, empowering students through convenient, flexible learning while promoting Islamic values and personal development. The center’s commitment to knowledge, spirituality, and community service stands as a beacon of hope for thousands, proving that education truly has the power to transform lives.
